Violent acts reported in opposition leader’s campaign

During last week acts of violence have been reported on the electoral campaign for December 6th. On Wednesday 25th on an opposition campaign act happening in Altagracia de Orituco firing occurred. The shots caused the death of Luis Manuel Diaz, one of the general secretaries of the party Democratic Action (Acción Democrática). Lilian Tintori, spouse of the opposition leader Leopoldo López, was present in the act and was also on the scaffold when the bullet impacted Díaz. On the other hand, last Monday 23rd motorcycle groups wearing hoods and shirts of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela) attacked Miguel Pizarro, candidate of the constituent circuit 3 of Miranda for the Democratic Union Roundtable (Mesa de la Unidad Democrática). The assault occurred on the Jose Félix Ribas neighborhood when Pizarro was participating in a motorcycle caravan. The perpetrators of the attack who possessed rifles and guns fired in the air to intimidate and disperse those participating in the act.

New members join international accompaniment

The National Electoral Council (Consejo Nacional Electoral) informed that authorities, electoral technicians, academicians and personalities from different parts of the world will arrive to Venezuela to escort and observe closely the electoral process during the parliamentary elections of December 6th. The former presidents José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (Spain), Omar Torrijos (Panamá) and Horacio Serpa (Colombia) will be among the invited. Additionally, given the acts of violence occurred on last hours within the framework of the electoral campaign, the European Parliament ratified their will to send a delegation comprised of 12 representatives between December 3rd and December 7th. The dispatch of the mission is conditioned to the will of Venezuelan authorities. On this matter, it is important to recall that last April the Parliament’s Conference of Presidents authorized a mission that had to be suspended because of lack of cooperation from Venezuelan authorities according to the European Parliament.

President of the Venezuelan parliament says that if the United Socialist Party of Venezuela does not win the elections, there will be a “conflict of powers”

Diosdado Cabello, president of the National Assembly, vice-president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela) and candidate for the parliamentary elections of this December 6th, said that if the ruling party losses the majority on the parliament there will be a conflict of powers. Cabello stated that Nicolás Maduro will not allow the parliament to determine the direction of the country. Additionally, Cabello stated that the candidates of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela) will continue participating in inauguration acts of public works and acts in which resources are delivered to people. On this matter, it is important to emphasize that on November 5th the National Electoral Council (Consejo Nacional Electoral) approved an “especial campaign norm” that does not allow to do campaigning on public acts related to government positions. The Democratic Union Roundtable (Mesa de la Unidad Democrática) has denounced on repeated occasions that candidates of the ruling party and even the President Nicolas Maduro, have used public resources for proselytism acts.

Democratic Unity Roundtable will not sign Unasur document of acceptance of results

Jesus Torrealba, campaign manager of the United Venezuela Command , said that the Democratic Unity Roundtable will not sign the document of acceptance of results proposed by the electoral mission of Unasur. He attributed this decision to the fact that this document is similar to  the one previously presented by the PSUV  that did not meet the demanded conditions. Torrealba said he «would not give a blank check to anyone» and clarify that his political  group has  always  respected the results. He further noted that » on  December 6th they will not only respect the results but they  will force the government to respect them as well «.

PSUV distributed false electoral flyers changing positions of Min-unity and MUD in the electoral ballot

Candidates of the Democratic Unity Roundable denounced  that the Venezuelan United Socialist Party (PSUV) was handing out fake electoral ballots to confuse the voter. Adriana Pichardo, deputy candidate of Aragua state indicated by twitter that this mechanism would seek to generate mistakes by voters at the time of the elections. A week ago they had filed complaints about the similarity between the images and colors of the  Min-Unity Party and the Democratic Unity Roundtable, which led the National Electoral Council to order the withdrawal of Min Unity propaganda for violating the Article 75 of the Law of Electoral Processes.

National Electoral Council sanctions political parties for violating the rules

One of the main directors of the National Electoral Council (CNE), Luis Emilio Rondon Gonzalez said the agency had sanctioned the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), MIN Unit and the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) for violations of the election rules . He said that the CNE opened several «precautionary measures» to the PSUV for using children and adolescents in advertising pieces that also lacked the Fiscal Register. The representative of the CNE said that 314 prosecutors were deployed to monitor the election campaign and until Thursday have received about 300 complaints of violations of election rules without specifying the types of offenses committed.
